Senedd Cymru’s Health and Social Committee recently called for written evidence to support an inquiry they were holding into the effectiveness of Welsh Government strategy, regulations and associated actions to prevent and reduce obesity in Wales.
We welcome the Senedd’s focus on this area of health, especially as, being a devolved nation, many levers are within Wales’ gift to make inroads against obesity. As an organisation working across the UK, we also understand where UK wide collaboration is required. In our work across Wales our focus is finding ways to make healthier food more affordable, available and appealing to consumers.
In our written response, we highlight the need for Welsh Government strategy to focus on food environments in Wales that make the healthy choice the easy choice. We also highlight nine recommendations on how they can make positive changes to the food environment in Wales.
Food environment | Lead by example | Drive collaboration across the UK |
---|---|---|
Price, availability and convenience | Enhancing catering and hospitality through effective public procurement | Mandatory healthy food targets for retailers Implement broad levy on salt and sugar |
Advertising | Guidance on advertising food and drink on public land and assets | TV and online advertising restrictions |
Understanding the challenge and progress | Adjust for self-reported adult obesity rates Monitor compliance with school food nutrition standards Extend the Child Measurement Programme | Mandate industry reporting of nutritional profile and food sales |
