About Nesta

Nesta is an innovation foundation. For us, innovation means turning bold ideas into reality and changing lives for the better. We use our expertise, skills and funding in areas where there are big challenges facing society.

  • Newly-launched website GetAHeatPump.org.uk provides consumer-friendly, impartial and non-commercial guidance on heat pumps
  • The website, which includes a quiz to help people find the right heat pump for their home, installation guides, and case studies, has been tested and developed with consumers and launched on Wednesday 2 October
  • Heat pumps are essential for net zero, but only 250,000 UK households have them
  • The website is supported by Which UK? and the Energy Saving Trust

Innovation agency Nesta and charity The MCS Foundation have come together to launch a newly-developed platform, designed to demystify the heat pump process for UK consumers, supported by Which UK? and the Energy Saving Trust.

GetAHeatPump.org.uk addresses the gap in impartial and reliable advice for those looking to get a heat pump, by providing an end-to-end guide on how to transition to clean heat.

The website includes features such as:

  • A quiz designed to help people find the right heat pump for their home
  • Information on the cost of the heat pump installation process
  • Resources on how to find a heat pump installer
  • Case studies from heat pump owners
  • Renovation tips on how to prepare your home for a heat pump

Transitioning from gas boilers to low-carbon heating systems such as heat pumps will be essential for the UK to reach its net zero goals. But despite this, most people in the UK have never seen a heat pump – with less than 1% using heat pumps to heat their homes.

Previous research from Nesta has found high satisfaction amongst heat pump owners. It found that among people who have had a heat pump installed in their current home, 81% are as satisfied or more satisfied with heat pumps compared to their previous heating system. The figure is similar - 83% - when looking at heat pump owners in Victorian or older properties.

By making information on heat pumps and the installation more accessible and streamlined, the Get a Heat Pump platform aims to make it easier for people to understand heat pumps and whether they might be right for their homes, and enable them to take concrete steps towards adopting one.

The website includes a number of case studies of current heat pump owners and their experiences, which can be viewed here. If you’d like to speak to a case study, please let us know.

About The MCS Foundation

The MCS Foundation was founded to oversee the MCS standards scheme which certifies the quality of renewable energy across UK homes. Supporting this important work remains fundamental, but our role as a Foundation goes further. As a catalyst for change we convene partners from all parts of our sector – driving innovation to accelerate the use of carbon free energy in UK homes and other building types too. We support and develop action-orientated programmes to address critical issues like retrofitting UK homes at scale, and expanding the skills-base that our sector urgently needs. And we commission robust, independent research that informs and shapes better decision making to drive a carbon free future for all UK homes.
