A resource for coordinating clean heat schemes
Welcome to our collaborative space to share and learn about practical examples of clean heat neighbourhood schemes across the UK. We've gathered inspiring case studies to showcase how local bodies are decarbonising home heating through area-based approaches: from local authority-wide collective purchasing schemes for heat pumps to city-centre heat networks.
Our goal is to make these projects more visible and accessible – aiming to foster collaboration and accelerate the rollout of clean heat solutions across the UK. So, whether you're a local council, community group, or simply curious, we hope you can find relevant examples for quick inspiration, or guidance on how to start a coordinated transition for your neighbourhood or area.
Below is a map of projects around the UK, giving a visual breakdown of approaches by context and the type of low-carbon heat technology used. We invite contributions from any scheme that is in the process of switching multiple households from fossil-fuel heating.
Alongside the map, we will have more detailed studies on selected schemes – highlighting their key features, surfacing transferable learnings, signposting to further resources and points of contact for each one. We also aim to generate analyses on types, topics or themes from the case studies.
As a world-first approach, Heat the Streets showed the viablity of installing a shared ground loop on the public road like other utilities.
Replacing old, inefficient night storage heaters with networked ground source heat pumps, this retrofit reduced heating and hot water bills by up to 66%.

We're building this resource together. We want to reduce the need for anyone to start from scratch by sharing knowledge, resources and analysis of themes emerging from these case studies. Our goal is to create a living, evolving platform, featuring a user-friendly map and detailed case studies that highlight key learnings, and connect you with the people behind these projects.
