Join us for a discussion on the role of research and evaluation in policymaking with the Hon Dr Andrew Leigh MP, in conversation with BIT President Emeritus David Halpern. 

The Hon Dr Andrew Leigh MP will discuss his role in shaping experimentation and evaluation in the Australian government. He and David will also discuss the need for greater and better evidence synthesis, following the publication of the Global Evidence Report earlier this month.

The Hon Dr Andrew Leigh MP

The Hon Dr Andrew Leigh MP is the Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities, Treasury and Employment, and Federal Member for Fenner in the ACT. Prior to being elected in 2010, Andrew was a professor of economics at the Australian National University. He holds a PhD in Public Policy from Harvard, having graduated from the University of Sydney with first class honours in Arts and Law. Andrew is a past recipient of the Economic Society of Australia’s Young Economist Award and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences.

Professor David Halpern CBE

David Halpern CBE is President Emeritus at the Behavioural Insights Team having previously been the team’s CEO from launch of the company (2010-2023) and President & Founding Director (2023-2024). Prior to BIT, David was the first Research Director of the Institute for Government and between 2001 and 2007 was the Chief Analyst at the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit. David was also appointed as the What Works National Advisor in July 2013, a position he held until 2022 through which he led efforts to improve the use of evidence across the UK government.
