About Nesta

Nesta is an innovation foundation. For us, innovation means turning bold ideas into reality and changing lives for the better. We use our expertise, skills and funding in areas where there are big challenges facing society.

This event took place on Wednesday 24 January.

Nesta’s Mission Studio builds new purpose-driven, venture-backable companies and puts them on a path to delivering both meaningful social impact and attractive financial returns. Since the launch of the studio in September 2021, Nesta, with studio partner Founders Factory, has invested in scaling mission-driven startups whose impact connects with Nesta’s three missions: narrowing the outcome gaps for young children, creating healthier food environments and slashing household carbon emissions en route to net zero.

Our CEO, Ravi Gurumurthy, met with our Nesta mission experts for networking drinks and to hear from the next generation of mission led startups:

Home decarbonisation

Carno is building the platform for enterprise-scale home decarbonisation. Carno revolutionises the traditional supply chain and paves the way for the new era of renewable home energy technologies. By boosting supply chain efficiency and quality while reducing costs, Carno gains its competitive edge while directly benefiting our customers and consumers.

EcoNest is an AI-enabled asset manager that acquires and retrofits energy-inefficient properties to let as eco-friendly rentals. Econest aspires to become the largest eco-friendly landlord in the UK and Europe.

Renbee is powering home decarbonisation through technology and finance. Our mission is for everyone to live in a carbon free home by connecting people and systems whilst simplifying processes across the entire infrastructure needed to reduce the carbon emissions from buildings. Our in-market digital platform supports high-quality installers in navigating complex administrative and regulatory processes from sourcing install-ready leads to handing over projects with unique guarantees that help consumers access green finance to make projects more affordable for everyone.

Healthy lives

Martee’s are using AI to bring demand forecasting for grab-and-go food into today's world. At a time of unprecedented omni-channel growth, with rising consumer appetite for less processed products, it's now harder than ever for food service and retail businesses - still stuck on spreadsheets and 'guesstimates' - to offer consistent, quality food at affordable prices. Towards Martee's vision for a healthier convenience food system, they're working to unlock missed business revenue with a product designed bespoke for grab-and-go food in food service and retail settings. In their first 6 months they've already set up a 'living lab' network of 10 micro-stores - which form a test environment and proprietary data source that they're building their MVP around - that has already seen an 81% reduction in waste and 16% profit uplift since the introduction of their forecasting tool.

Freebird Club is a social travel and homestay club for older adults (50+), empowering members to travel, connect, meet-up, and stay together, as part of a trusted community of peers. “My first experience with Freebird was wonderful. My husband and I really enjoyed Catherine’s stay, and did many local things with her. Freebird is an inspired idea.”
