About Nesta

Nesta is an innovation foundation. For us, innovation means turning bold ideas into reality and changing lives for the better. We use our expertise, skills and funding in areas where there are big challenges facing society.

This event took place on Friday 9 December. You can watch the recording below.

Heat pumps are one of the most viable options to get UK households off of gas and catapult the UK to a low carbon future. They’ll be needed at scale in the coming years to meet the UK’s net zero ambitions.

Currently, consumer awareness of heat pumps is low and most people have never even seen one. Without having seen how a heat pump works in a typical household, consumers could be less likely to commit to adopting one.

To overcome this barrier, Nesta’s sustainable future team have recently piloted a service that allows the public to visit a heat pump near them. Their work indicates that rolling out a large-scale network of heat pump show homes could be an important tool for increasing heat pump adoption. Their Design Lead, Alasdair Hiscock, joined us for a special online webinar to discuss how they designed the service, what they've learned so far and what’s next for the project.

Why you should watch the recording

This recording is for anyone involved in the heat pump industry, whether you're an installer, manufacturer or retailer. If you work in climate change, local government, social housing, neighbourhood planning, or in a local or national energy group, and are interested in how more households can access heat pumps, then this recording is for you.

Our experts shared insights from the scheme, talking about the design and data work behind the service and discussing what this could mean for heat pump adoption in the UK.

If you’re interested in learning more about the value of heat-pump networks, the partnerships available and the pilots that we are hoping to run in the future, then please listen back.
